Founded in 1957, the Amarillo Genealogical Society (AGS) is a volunteer-led non-profit organization committed to promoting and preserving family history throughout the Texas Panhandle’s 26 counties. From its beginnings as a small group of local researchers, AGS has grown into a vibrant community of genealogists, historians, and heritage enthusiasts working together to keep the stories of the past alive.
Our Legacy
Over the years, AGS members have led countless efforts to collect, transcribe, and preserve vital records from across the Texas Panhandle. Past projects have included:
- Indexing local cemetery and obituary records
- Collecting pioneer family histories
- Partnering with local libraries and archives to digitize public records
- Publishing newsletters and historical booklets on regional families and communities
AGS has also hosted annual workshops, guest speaker events, and collaborations with schools and libraries to promote the value of genealogical education across generations.
Our Ongoing Work
Today, we continue that mission with:

- Monthly programs on research methods, historical topics, and local archives
- Member-led projects like cemetery documentation, courthouse record research, and heritage preservation
- Partnerships with local institutions to expand public access to genealogical materials
- Educational outreach for beginners, youth, and seasoned researchers alike
Whether you’re tracing your roots back to pioneer settlers or diving into the stories of more recent generations, AGS provides the tools, support, and community to help you discover and preserve your family's legacy.
